In the days of Yore, people either spent a day with the phone book in front of them phoning round as many insurers as they could to get a car insurance quote when they received their renewal notice or bought a new car. Either that or they would go to an insurance broker, ask them to do that legwork and pay commission for the privilege.
Thankfully, the internet has spared us all that kind of headache. Not only can we search online for different car insurers’ websites to get quotes direct from them but we can also go to any number of comparison websites to help us to find cheap car insurance at the click of a mouse. Yes, online car insurance saves time and is also the best and most efficient way to find cheap car insurance.
Searching for online car insurance is quick, efficient and can save you a lot of money and in theory if you opt for a comparison site you only have to enter your details once. However, there are now so many comparison sites out there, it’s hard to choose one. They all seem to have different deals with different insurers (some are owned by insurance companies, which doesn’t really lead them to being very unbiased) and you seem to get different prices for different insurers depending on which site you use.
What’s more, the sites highlight what each policy does or doesn’t offer, and when faced with those options (‘should I pay an extra £24 for legal cover??’) it makes decisions much harder to make and adds confusion where there was previously clarity in your mind (‘I already have legal cover through my house insurance…/my dad’s a solicitor…’ etc.).
As if that wasn’t enough to make you think twice about the value of comparison sites, then consider that there may be questions that haven’t been asked of you through the comparison site that the insurance company will ask you if you decide to apply for their insurance. For example, whether or not you have children would not normally be a standard question on the comparison site, but it can affect the cost of the insurance when the insurers ask you (because if the answer is yes then those children are extra occupants of your car and potential litigants if you injure them in an accident). So after going through the process of searching for cheap car insurance and finding what appears to be a good quote, you may find that you don’t qualify for that quote after all and have to start all over again.
Until someone comes up with a comparison site that will compare all the other comparison sites, for now in order to get cheap car insurance you might be better off going direct to the insurer, with a list of what you do and don’t want from your insurance. It will mean filling in your details a few times as you search for cheap car insurance through different insurance companies, but it still takes a fraction of the time it used to take on the phone. Just be careful when you enter personal details online that you are buying from a genuine, reputable company.
