Sebastian Vettel has won the Australian Grand Prix after a flawless performance in Melbourne. Vettel said “It was not an easy race,” and also said “The start was crucial. I had a good getaway but didn’t know if it was enough until I saw Lewis and Mark battling for position. On the first stint I trying to hold a gap and then at some point you reach a cliff and the tires see some degradation.”
The German, who had never finished in Albert Park, led from start to finish, only losing its advantage over the two pit stops required by Pirelli tires, and finally came home comfortable 22 seconds ahead of Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton said “I think we can definitely take this and be very proud of ourselves,” and also said “The guys did a great job coming into this weekend. A week or two ago we were not expecting to be anywhere near top five, to come away with second and the car more reliable, I think it is a great achievement for us guys.”
Vitaly Petrov claimed a brilliant podium for Renault, fending off Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari late on. Mark Webber was fourth ahead of Alonso, Jenson Button came home sixth following a penalty, while Sergio Perez, Kamui Kobayashi, Felipe Massa and Toro Rosso’s Sebastien Buemi completed the top 10.
