Yamaha Motor Co.’s Star Motorcycles recently unveiled two new cruisers during the 2013 Bike Week to give Harleys a run for their money. The lightning-themed bikes, the Bolt and the Bolt R-Spec are classified as “Urban Performance Bobbers.” The announcement came just a week after Harley-Davidson introduced the Breakout, its new urban prowler. The Bolt shares a similar design aesthetic with the Harley-Davidson Breakout, but for less than half the price. Yamaha and its Star brand are evidently targeting a more youthful, urban and frugal demographic — a savvy tactic in this struggling economy.
The new motorcycles feature a retro appearance, without chrome, with rounded smoked-lens LCD digital speedometers and wave-type brake rotors. The R-Spec is distinguished by a unique paint job and graphics, remote-reservoir shocks and a suede-like seat with contrast stitching, according to CycleNews.com. The Bolt bikes take advantage of a new double-cradle frame that incorporates a fuel-injected, air-cooled 950cc engine. Slim and relatively lightweight with a compact chassis, as Motor Sports Newswire noted, the Bolt is “best for urban riding fun.”
The Bolt is engineered for riding on city streets. StarMotorcycles.com lists a few details: A rubber damper helps the clutch mitigate the fatigue that often accompanies “stop and go” driving during heavy traffic. The Bolt’s short wheelbase of 61.8 inches adds to the motorcycle’s responsive handling— a significant advantage when making tight turns in an urban environment. On hot asphalt streets, the Bolts’ ceramic-composite-plated cylinders dissipate heat and lessen oil consumption.
The two Bolts will come with custom Yamaha parts and accessories such as steel fenders for at-home personal customization, as the LA Times reported. Yamaha’s Star Motorcycles’ intention is to present riders with a basic canvas that motorcycle aficionados can customize and accessorize to fit their company philosophy: “We build it, you make it your own.”
Due for showroom release in April, the standard Bolt will be available in Raven (gloss black) or Pearl White with a price tag of $7,990. The Bolt R-Spec is set for release two months later for an additional $300 in either Camo Green or Matte Grey.
